Four clues Meghan Markle will enter US politics
Meghan Markle has sparked rumours that she could venture into politics. Since the 41-year-old’s letter to Procter and Gamble about their sexist advert as a child, the Duchess has often used her platform to speak out about social matters such as gender inequality. Here, we take a look at four signs that Meghan may be set to take on a new political venture in the US.
1. Political payout
The Sussexes are understood to have paid almost £90,000 to Michelle Obama’s Former Press Secretary, a move that some say is a clear hint at Meghan’s political aims.
The payout was apparently made to Ms McCormick Lelyveld’s PR company KMLSA LLC for “strategic support for social impact PR.”
Russell Myers, the Daily Mirror’s royal editor, claimed that the payment “gives you an indication about whether [Meghan] has political ambition”.
Mr Myers told Sky News Australia that some find the rumour “frankly ridiculous”, but he wouldn’t “bet against it”.
2. Meghan’s push on paid leave after giving birth
In 2021, Meghan reportedly contacted senators in the US as she campaigned for paid paternal leave.
Meghan contacted senators Shelley Moore Capito and Susan Collins using a withheld number.
Senator Captio claims that she was driving when receiving Meghan’s call, and admits thinking it was Senator [Joe] Manchin at first as “his calls come in blocked”.
The politician went on to state that Meghan introduced herself as, ‘This is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex'”.
Having been given their number by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, the purpose of Meghan’s call was to push for them to adopt a policy for paid leave after having a baby.
3. Charity work as a senior royal
Meghan used her time as a senior royal to promote her interest in certain areas, such as mental health and women’s rights.
In 2018, shortly after marrying Prince Harry, the Duchess released ‘Together: Our Commmunity Cookbook’ in response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
4. Vaccine equity
Meghan and Harry spoke about their views on vaccine equity at a New York-based Covid concert in 2021.
With 60,000 people present, the couple told the crowd that “where you’re born should not dictate your ability to survive”.
Speaking at Global Citizen Live, Meghan claimed that “every single person on this planet has a fundamental right” to get the Covid vaccine.
She added that it was “wrong” that “just ten wealthy nations” got the vaccine”, adding that it is “just not ok”.
