Football start date UK: Hancock provides key update on when Premier League could resume
The Health Secretary was quizzed by LBC’s Nick Ferrari regarding when the Premier League could return to action, with the date of June 8 suggested. Mr Hancock stated that his staff are in talks with both football and horse riding regarding allowing sporting competitions behind-closed-doors to go ahead with strict social distancing rules in place.
Mr Ferrari asked: “You will have heard that the Premier League is thinking of resuming games by June the 8, how realistic is that?”
The Health Secretary said: “I don’t know and I haven’t seen the details of it but I do think that trying to find a way to have socially distanced sport as much as possible behind closed doors following public health rules, I do think there is value to exploring that.”
Nick Ferrari replied: “Players can’t socially distance though can they?”
Mr Hancock said: “Well not while they are tackling each other but certainly, they can off the pitch.
“Horse racing is also looking at how they can do socially distanced behind closed doors racing.
“I think these are important things to explore and to tackle the practical questions they raise.
“I know that the public health experts that work for me are engaged with football and horse racing.
“I do think it is do-able but a lot of work needs to be done to find a way to make it happen.”
