The UK is set to see the first snow of winter this week, with two weather warnings in place across the country.

Plunging temperatures will be accompanied by frost, hail, sleet and ice, particularly in northern parts of the nation, the Met Office predicts. There could be around two to five centimetres of snow for areas above 200 metres, and up to 10 centimetres in the highest parts of Britain.

Weather warnings are in place across central Scotland and the west-coast from 6pm tonight until Thursday at midday.

They state that snow showers and icy stretches of road could bring travel disruption during that period, with drivers advised to check their routes before setting off and ensure their vehicles are ‘winter ready’.

Gritters will be operating this week in Scotland to try and keep the majority of the road network safe and moving.

The cold weather is then expected to make its way south by Friday, with the wintry mix predicted to rage on until the middle of next week.

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist, said today’s snow is likely to be short-lived, but predicted there could be more on lower levels next week. It is currently uncertain exactly where it will fall.

But this weekend is likely to be ‘very unsettled’, with snow, rain and cold winds expected across the country, although mainly in the north.

The Met Office warns that frosts may form in the clear periods between bands of wintry showers, and these could be sharp or even severe in prolonged clear conditions in north-western parts of the country.
