Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at the leisure centre of a popular holiday park.

The fire is understood to have started in the sauna of Devon Hills Holiday Village near Paignton early this morning.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 7.09am to a fire in the sauna of the leisure complex at Devon Hills Holiday Village in Paignton.

“The building is over two floors measuring approximately 40m x 20m. Approximately 50 per cent of the roof is involved in the fire.

“We have more than ten fire engines at the scene, as well as a water bowser for extra water. We are using an aerial ladder platform as a water tower to fight the fire. We also have two main jets in use.”

People are being asked to avoid the area, Devon Live reports.

Only one lane of the A385 in Totnes, Devon, is in use due to the major operation. Traffic is busy on both carriageways between Totnes and Paignton.

In a further tweet, the fire service said: “The A385 between Paignton and Totnes is down to one lane outside Devon Hills Holiday Park as we are accessing the hydrant on the road to fight a large fire at the holiday park’s leisure centre. Avoid the area if you can.”

It is unclear if anyone has been hurt in the fire. Express Online has contacted Devon Hills Holiday Village for comment.

Devon Hills Holiday Village is family-run accommodation, recognised by Visit England which gave it awards in recent years.
