Fierce backlash as ‘unbelievably arrogant’ Tory Baroness claims UK is ‘REMAIN country’

Twitter users furiously reacted to a Tory Baroness’ claims that the UK is a “Remain country”. Baroness Patience Wheatcroft made the remark during an interview with LBC radio host Nick Ferrari, adding that Leave voters are “wrong”. Mr Ferrari asked: “But they’re Tories aren’t they? Not all, but a lot of Brexit voters are Conservative voters?” Baroness Wheatcroft said “absolutely”, before Mr Ferrari continued: “So had your party gained a slice of the 30 whatever percent it was, it would have been in a better place, why Baroness would you want to bolt the door in their face?”

The Tory peer simply replied: “Because they’re wrong.”

The radio presenter remarked “well that’s in your view, respectfully”, before Baroness Wheatcroft confirmed: “That is in my view, but also because it’s not enough to actually win in a General Election.

“Nigel Farage did incredibly well in the European election on a single issue. He’ll do well but not so well in a General Election. The Conservative Party, any mainstream party, has to appeal to a much broader base if it’s going to win in a General Election.”

Mr Ferrari questioned: “And lastly that appeal is for whoever the man or woman is to say actually ‘we are now actually a Remain party’, the Conservative Party?”

We’re a Remain country

The former Sunday Telegraph editor responded: “We’re a Remain country.”

Me Ferrari said incredulously: “Well with respect we’re not because the last vote that tested that was to leave.”

Baroness Wheatcroft concluded: “Demographically, because of the changes by January this year, even if nobody who voted in the referendum in 2016 changed their mind, by January this year we became a Remain country.

“And the polls show you we’re a Remain country now.”

Listeners took to Twitter in outrage, with one posting: “These snobbish and arrogant comments from Baroness Wheatcroft are quite shocking. Almost a ‘let them eat cake’ moment.”

Another said: “I’m not surprised by the comments of Baroness Wheatcroft that they have contempt and disdain for those who vote different from them, it just confirms what I already knew.

“It reminds me of before we were allowed to have the vote sometimes seen but never heard.”

A third remarked: “Did anyone hear that Baroness on @LBC this morning talking to Nick, unbelievably arrogant woman. No wonder they @Conservatives are toast.”

A fourth added: “Can’t believe what I’m listening to on @LBC with @NickFerrariLBC, Baroness Patience Wheatcroft is deluded, well, that’s an understatement, has she not been in the UK for the last 3 years???”

The comments come as Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, has declared that it is “fine” for Britain to unshackle itself from the EU without a deal as the Brexit crisis continues.

He told New York Review of Books: “If the UK wants to leave in an orderly manner, this treaty is the only option.

“If the choice is to leave without a deal – fine. If the choice is to stay in the EU – also fine. But if the choice is still to leave the EU in an orderly manner, this treaty is the only option. This is all that our legal constraints allow.”

Under the terms of the deal struck by Theresa May and the EU to delay Brexit until October 31, Brussels bosses have said the Withdrawal Agreement cannot be renegotiated.

Meanwhile, Tory leadership rivals have stepped up their campaigns to replace Mrs May after she announced her departure from Number 10 last week.

And Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn has said an election or referendum is now the “only way out” of the Brexit crisis following mounting pressure to back a public vote.

Mr Corbyn said that going “back to the people” was now the only option when faced with the prospect of a no-deal Brexit and an incoming Tory prime minister “with no mandate”.
