Fergie reveals she has named her reconstructed breast — and it’s hilarious
Sarah Ferguson heartbreak as she explains how mother made her feel ‘worthless’
Sarah Ferguson has revealed that, following a single mastectomy to treat breast cancer, she has chosen to nickname her reconstructed breast.
Never one to shy away from difficult topics, the Duchess of York proved she was made of stronger stuff with her attitude towards life’s knocks in the latest episode of her podcast, Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah.
The 63-year-old grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year following a routine mammogram screening.
She underwent an eight-hour operation in June at London’s King Edward VII’s Hospital in June to treat the cancer.
Speaking about her recovery with co-host Sarah Thomson, the Duchess — commonly known by her nickname Fergie — sent them both into fits of giggles when she revealed she was “still coming to terms with my new best friend”, referring to her reconstructed breast, and sharing what she named it: “Derek”.

When asked why she chose the name Derek, Fergie replied: “I don’t know, it just made me laugh that I have now a friend who’s with me all the time who’s protecting with his shield of armour.”
Fergie, who is divorced from Prince Andrew, also shared that her right breast is called “Eric”.
She added: “Poor Eric on the right is feeling rather sad because he’s not as perky as Derek on the left, but I’ll get Eric balanced, don’t worry.”

Fergie also shared an update on her recovery on the podcast, explaining that while she is “getting much better”, she thinks it will be another month before she starts to travel.
Speaking about her current condition she said it was like having “gotten new wheels and a new engine”. She added: “I’ll be taking the car for a bit of a run soon.”
The Duchess added during the episode that her inability to travel means that she is missing spending time with her four grandchildren during the summer holidays.
