Female MPs declare ‘solidarity’ with Meghan over press ‘invasion’

Female MPs have declared their “solidarity” with the Duchess of Sussex over “distasteful and misleading” stories about her.

In an open letter to Meghan, the cross-party group of “all political persuasions” says certain articles have “represented an invasion of your privacy” and “sought to cast aspersions about your character”.

The duchess recently revealed that British friends told her not to marry Prince Harry because the tabloid press would “destroy” her life.

Some stories have been “seeking to tear a woman down for no apparent reason”, the MPs add.

Such items have been written “without any good reason as far as we can see”, the group of 72 continue.

They describe as “more concerning still what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories”.

The MPs “from all backgrounds” they say they stand with Meghan “in saying it cannot be allowed to go unchallenged”.

As women in public life, they say they share with the duchess an “understanding of the abuse and intimidation” which is used as a means of “disparaging women in public office from getting on with our very important work”.

They “expect the national media to have the integrity to know when a story is in the national interest”.

Labour MP Holly Lynch, who posted the letter on her Twitter feed, said she had become “increasingly uncomfortable” with some of the articles about Meghan.

“As women in public life we have some insight into how it feels, but when we stick together we can make a difference,” she said.
