Fatherland day: 100 years since Red Army was founded
Although, 100 years later, it is no longer known as the ‘Red Army’, the Russian military has re-emerged as a counterpoint to the US and NATO.
Russia’s held its annual holiday on February 23 honouring its armed forces and, this year, the centenary of the Red Army.
Following years of decline after the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia found itself facing old opponents as Western alliances like NATO increasingly pushed eastward, and Russia’s military’s been transformed in recent years after a huge investment and is again regarded as a powerful force.
Al Jazeera’s Jonah Hull reports from Moscow.
