Fans expected to down 100,000,000 pints of beer as England face France

Football fans will down 100million pints this weekend as the Three Lions take on champions France for a World Cup semi-final place.

And pub bosses are praying England reach the final four, as they prepare for their busiest night in four years.

With the tournament resuming in Qatar today, bars will serve 17million pints tonight when Argentina play Holland and Brazil play Croatia in the first two quarter-finals.

That will rise to 25million tomorrow, as fans pour into pubs to cheer on Gareth Southgate’s side in Le Crunch match. A further 12million will be pulled on Sunday, analysts say.

That will make it the busiest weekend for the pub trade since England reached the semis in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. And 50million beers will be necked by fans watching at home.

Supporters toasted goals by Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka by necking 15million pints as England beat Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday.

Emma McClarkin, of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: ‘When England do well, so do our pubs.’ Punters will have downed 300million pints by the time the World Cup ends, she added.

But the bookies reckon the Three Lions will have their work cut out to beat Didier Deschamps’ team. France are 7/5 to win, with England at 2/1.
