Famous Christmas market slammed as ‘waste of time’ with ‘overpriced beer’

A famous Christmas market has been slammed as “waste of time” with “overpriced beer and sausages” by disappointed punters.

Hailed as the largest of its kind outside Germany, Birmingham‘s Frankfurt Christmas Market is celebrated by its organisers as offering tempting pretzels, bratwursts and toasted almonds as well as being a “massive favourite” with locals and visitors.

But some have criticised the annual event for being too focused on food, lacking arts and craft stalls and for the price of certain treats.

Recent Tripadvisor reviews have been fairly daming, with one reviewer commenting in Novemeber last year: “I’ve been going for years and this has to be the worst year! Where’s all the craft stalls gone?”

They added: “I love a bratwurst (£8) and beer but not at them prices. I went to Frankurt three years ago and I’m sorry, beer is less than half them prices and a lot better!”

Another reviewer, in a review dated November 2022, wrote: “It’s dead! No fun. Not [Christmas] at all. Used to [be] great years back but not anymore. Dont see the [Christmas] spirit.”

A third review posted on Saturday (November 26) said: “This is not a Christmas Market but an Al Fresco Food Sale. Not enough stalls selling Christmas Goods or Gifts. Too many Bratwurst and Glüwein stalls peddling supposed fare of Frankfurt. If you’ve ever been to a German Christmas Market, you would be sorely disappointed.”

Fellow reviewer 505lisam wrote: “Waste of time. Came from Wales to visit the markets and buy some Christmas gifts. Nothing here apart from sausage, nut and beer stalls, then more sausage, nut and beer stalls.

“Overpriced and so very busy. My advice is to go elsewhere to get a Christmassy experience.”

Reviewer Sarah S said this year’s market is just as bad as 2022’s, adding: “Just over priced food and drink with very few stalls selling clothing, jewellery etc. For a major city, the atmosphere was poor and the streets scruffy. Shame on you struggling Birmingham City Council!”

Of the 181 reviews for the Christmas market posted to Tripadvisor, 116 rate the experience as “terrible”, while just nine rated it “excellent”.

A reviewer from Kidderminster gave the top rating and commented: “Visited about seven times pre [Christmas] last year. Love the atmosphere and the hype, makes [Christmas] special.”

Another wrote: “Look forward to this every year, gluwein music and fun. Also plenty of others bars around once you’ve had your German wurst and a pint or two.

“The stalls are the usual mixture of salt rock crystals, marshmallows, wooden toys and waffles. But hey ho, Christmas can’t begin until we’ve been.”

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market has been approached for comment.
