Family sue for £300,000 after drunk wedding guest died falling down Tube steps

Relatives of a man killed when he fell down a flight of concrete steps are suing London Underground over his death.

IT expert Bernard Ovu’s body was discovered at Canning Town Tube station six hours after he tripped at around 3am on on January 22, 2017.

He was said to have been drunk when he accidentally strayed into a staff area as he headed home from a wedding in Rotherhithe, south-east London.

His mother, Roselyn Aigbibo Ovu has launched a £300,000 claim against London Underground saying that there should have been more than one worker on duty at the time.

Bernard, 35, became trapped in the staff-only area when the emergency gates he went through were closed behind him, his lawyers say.

He was there for nearly an hour in the bitterly cold weather before he fell at 2.49am, suffering catastrophic head injuries. His body was discovered at 8.45am.

However, London Underground denies responsibility and said that Bernard was intoxicated and trespassing in a restricted area when he died.

Barrister Guy Watkins said that he was ‘behaving erratically and was obviously unsteady on his feet’.

He added that he had also tried to open the glass automatic doors on the Jubilee Line at Canada Water and had tried to open a fire door on the platform.

They added that he was not trapped and could have left the station through an emergency footrbidge at any time.

A trial will take place at a later date.
