Family seeks answers after rugby player died in hit and run day before 18th

A young rugby player was killed in a suspected hit and run a day before his 18th birthday, an inquest heard today.

Dylan Price was discovered with fatal injuries on the road just outside Bishop’s Castle in Shropshire hours before he would have celebrated his coming of age.

In an emotional plea to the driver, Louise Price, his mum, said: ‘We need a bit of closure, surely they need to tell us?’

The inquest heard that a passing driver found Dylan, who had been on his way home from a party, at 5am on September 19.

His dad Darren Price told ITV: ‘It is a massive loss, it will never obviously be replaced or get better in a way.

‘It is a job to know what to do and where to go really but we, as a family, are putting together strongly.’

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene of the crash, but Dylan was declared dead at 5.33am.

An investigation continues, with police and the victim’s family appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Shropshire coroner’s officer Emma Wilson said that the teenager, who worked as an apprentice in the family farm machinery business, had been hit by a vehicle as he was walking along the B4385 Brampton Road, a mile from the Welsh border.

His devastated parents, who also have two daughters, said he had spent the day before his birthday playing rugby, before going to parties.

The teenager was described as a committed member of Bishop’s Castle Rugby Club in Shropshire and as having a ‘smile everyone loved to see’.

A club spokesperson said: ‘Words cannot describe the feelings the boys are going through at the club right now.

‘Dylan Price was not only a club member or team mate he was a friend, a brother and always a smile everyone loved to see around the changing room.

‘He always gave his everything in to all he did, not just on the rugby pitch.

‘Dylan will forever be a part of Bishops Castle Rugby Club and will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and love go out to the family in this tough time.’

Police are urging anyone who may have seen Dylan walking along Brampton Road, or spotted any vehicles or people in the area acting suspiciously, to get in touch.

Officers would also like residents and businesses with CCTV or doorbell cameras, or drivers with dashcam footage of the area at around that time, to contact police.

The inquest at Shrewsbury was adjourned until next February.
