Family of man, 22, stabbed to death say he was 'destined for greatness'

One of the many young men who were stabbed during 10 knife attacks in London last weekend was ‘destined for greatness’, his family have said.

Lavaun Witter, 22, was pronounced dead just after 9pm on Friday after bystanders in Croydon tried to stop his bleeding with a towel and paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.

His ‘absolutely devastated’ family said in a statement: ‘No one could have seen this coming. Lavaun was destined for greatness and he wanted to fly high.

‘He just wanted to have a good life and to take care of his family. Everyone who knows him will remember him as a legend. We are all absolutely traumatised.

‘We don’t know how we are going to go on. It is just too painful. Long Live Lavz.’

They also said their local community in Peckham has been left ‘distraught’ by his violent death.

Another man was also found with a stab wound in a house near Wisbeach Road, in Croydon, South London, where Lavaun died.

The second victim was rushed to a hospital before the police arrived and he is now in a stable condition.

A woman, who lives in a block of flats near the scene of the stabbing, said she watched officers and medical staff desperately try to save Lavaun but ‘there was blood everywhere’.

She said ‘they tried really hard to save him but there was a lot of blood’ from a deep cut in his leg.

She also saw Lavaun’s mother arrive at the scene ‘crying and in pieces’.

Five stabbings were reported in London between 6.56pm and 9.12pm on Friday, another four were reported on Saturday between 11.20am and 6.10pm and one was reported on Sunday afternoon.

A 22-year-old died in Kilburn, north-west London, and at least 14 men were injured in total.

However, police have said there is nothing to suggest that any of the assaults were connected.

No arrests have been made in the investigation into Lavaun’s death and Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

She said: ‘Someone knows who did this and I would urge anyone who saw or heard anything shortly after 8pm on Friday evening to come forward, no matter how insignificant you think your information might be, it could help us piece together what happened.

‘Our thoughts are with Lavaun’s family who have been left devastated by his loss.’
