Family dynasties: The new class of Election 2020

The Greens’ Martins with their trio of candidates aren’t the only family aiming to build a political dynasty in this General Election.

Aontú’s leader and former Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín, running in Meath West, has his sisters, Emer in Meath East and Mairéad in Dún Laoghaire, on his party’s ticket.

Staying in the Royal County, Fianna Fáil TD Thomas Byrne in Meath East is accompanied by his brother, James, running for the party in neighbouring Louth.

Also in Louth, Fine Gael’s John McGahon is a nephew of long-serving party TD for the county, the late Brendan McGahon.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s running mate, Emer Currie, is a daughter of former TD and Presidential election candidate Austin Currie.

Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins is running in Limerick County with his cousin, James Collins, a candidate in Limerick City.

Both Fine Gael candidates in Tipperary have family connections to the Dáil.

Mary Newman Julian is a sister of Fine Gael Dublin Bay South TD Kate O’Connell, while Garret Ahearn is a son of the late Theresa Ahearn, who was a TD for Tipperary South.

Fianna Fáil’s Mary Fitzpatrick in Dublin Central is a daughter of former TD Dr Dermot Fitzpatrick.

In the south-east, Fine Gael candidate Patrick O’Neill is a son of former senator Pat O’Neill and his party’s candidate in Waterford, John Cummins, is a son of former senator Maurice Cummins.

Green Party candidates Neasa Hourigan in Dublin Central, Brian Leddin in Limerick City, and Róisín Garvey in Clare all come from political family backgrounds and had councillor parents.

And in Cork South-West, they’re not related as such, but the Social Democrats’ Holly Cairns and Fianna Fáil’s Christopher O’Sullivan are partners and councillors.
