The People’s Princess would have celebrated her 60th birthday this year. She was tragically killed in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997. At the time, Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed had been trying to escape the attention of the paparazzi.

Henri Paul, their driver, lost control of the car they were travelling in and crashed in a tunnel in the French capital.

Ms Collins said that Diana was the driving force behind the modernisation of the House of Windsor.

Writing in People magazine, the author said: “I think she brought the royal family into the 21st century.

“She was extremely modern.

“She was the first person to hold the hands of AIDS patients and walk along the road where there had been landmines.

“There wasn’t anyone else like her.”

Advocating against landmines has become her legacy, but at the time it provoked no little controversy.

Her support for an international treaty banning landmines was seen as a political stance, not merely a charitable one.

Earl Howe, the UK’s then-junior Defence minister called her a “loose cannon”, and said she was uninformed about the issue of landmines.

However, Diana insisted that her interest in the cause was not politically motivated.

“I am not a political figure. As I said at the time, and I’d like to re-iterate now, my interests are humanitarian.

“That is why I felt drawn to this human tragedy,” she said during a speech in June of 1997 about her trip.
