Ex-Tory advisor condemns XR after father blocked from hospital

Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion debate protest tactics

A former Tory advisor has condemned Extinction Rebellion as climate activists launch their “Big One” protests this morning.

Lauren McEvatt, who served as special adviser to the coalition Government’s Wales Office, said she “can’t stand these people”.

She said her view of the group was tainted by an experience with activists in 2019.

Speaking to Sky News this morning, Ms McEvatt said XR protesters prevented her father from visiting the hospital as he slipped into a diabetic coma.

She told the network that he was “blocked for 20 minutes”, adding they “put him at risk”.

Ms McEvatt added that she suspected “many people are in the same camp as me” due to their tactics.

The former SpAD called on the organisation to use logic and reason to further its climate goals.

The “Big One” protests will run over the next four days and see XR continue to employ disruption tactics but to a lesser extent than in previous years.

Activists have gathered in Parliament Square and will run events from Westminster until April 24, with organisers expecting approximately 50,000 people to picket Government offices and participate in a selection of activities.
