Tributes have been paid to a 65-year-old man from Liverpool who has died after falling whilst on holiday in France and Andorra.

Clive Betteridge, who was on holiday with his wife, reportedly fell 200ft down a stone channel and into a lake whilst hiking on Tuesday.

The accident happened on French territory but he was flown into Andorra, where he later died in hospital, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Mr Betteridge was a church warden at St Bart’s Roby and vicar Kate Wharton from the church said: “Along with other members of the church community at St Bart’s Roby I am devastated by the loss of our well-loved church warden Clive Betteridge.

“Clive was one of the mainstays of the church and community having served here for almost 30 years as sunday school teacher, choir master, in the church band, as part of the gardening team, and as church warden.

“He will be much missed and all our thoughts and prayers go out to Jacqui and Ruth and the whole family.”

Mr Betteridge was also steward at his beloved Everton football club, where they described him as “one of life’s good people”.

Dave Lewis, Everton’s head of security and stadium safety officer, said: “I first knew Clive back when he worked as a matchday steward in the Bullens Road stand.

“Due to his excellent people’s skills he was promoted to head steward of customer satisfaction, a position he served with passion and dedication until his retirement last year.

“Clive was a pleasure to work with. He was a proud Evertonian who always saw good in people and made fans’ matchday experience all the better with a bright smile and his warm nature.

“He was one of life’s good people and will be sorely missed by everyone at the club.”

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Andorra and are in touch with the local authorities.”
