'Even Norway hates us': People mock 'half-dead' Trafalgar Square Christmas tree

Londoners have savaged the famous Trafalgar Square Christmas tree after it arrived from Norway looking ‘scrawny’ and’ half dead’

Every year, Norwegians gift the capital a giant spruce in thanks and recognition for the UK’s assistance in World War Two.

The historic tradition has taken place since 1947 and marks the start of London’s Christmas countdown.

But the underwhelming selection this year led people to question if ‘even Norway hates us’.

Londoners complained that the 78ft tree looked ‘flea-bitten’ and ‘hungover’ with many asking ‘where’s the rest of it?’.

One person tweeted: ‘Can’t help feeling the good people of Norway are trying to tell us something here…’

Another joked: ‘Are we at war with Norway?’

There were even suggestions the tree might be revenge for Manchester United sacking its Norwegian-born manager.

‘Norway has not taken the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer well,’ one person quipped.

In attendance at the ceremony are the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the British ambassador to Norway and the mayor of Oslo, before the tree is brought to the UK via ship and lorry to take pride of place in the capital.

When the tree arrives in London a specialist rigging team are deployed to erect it using a hydraulic crane and adding energy-efficient light bulbs for decoration.

Crowds will gather at the base of the tree for a lighting ceremony on Thursday at 6pm.

The festive ceremony returns this year after international travel restrictions and a Tier 2 lockdown in London meant last year’s event had to be moved online.
