EU panic: Brexit Britain’s future terrifies ‘scared and nervous’ bloc claims John Redwood

The EU’s stance towards Britain during the Brexit talks has been influenced by their view the UK may still want to be aligned with the bloc. Tory MP John Redwood explained the European Union is also secretly nervous and fearful of what an independent Britain will mean for its own future. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Mr Redwood argued the UK is aware of the benefits out of the EU and this fact worries the bloc.

Mr Redwood said: “I think the EU is scared that the United Kingdom doesn’t want a comprehensive agreement.

“They are scared the UK doesn’t want an agreement that binds us to European Union rules, policies and the ways of doing things.

“They are caught in believing that the UK probably does still want to be bound like this.

“They are then behaving like they can force the UK into that shape.

“But every now and again you hear comments that they are very nervous that the UK, under its new Government, is quite happy to leave and does just primarily want a free trade agreement with the European Union.

“This is because the UK sees all sorts of advantages in choosing its own laws, setting its own taxes, spending its own money in the way the Brexit campaign proposed.”

During the interview, Mr Redwood hinted that this fear could turn to jealousy as the new relationship continues to develop.

The Tory MP argued this jealousy and inability to relax would be directly linked to their fears of a successful Britain out of the European Union.

Mr Redwood said: “I don’t think the EU is afraid of the trade deal per se.

“It is massively in their interest more than our interest.

“This is given that the EU sells to us so much more than we to them.

“I think the EU’s worry relates to everything else but the trade deal.

“I think the EU worries that if we have a reasonable scope to make our own laws, set our own taxes and negotiate our own trade deals with the rest of the world we may be quite good at that.

“What they don’t want is a very successful UK as soon as we leave the EU as they would see that as a commentary on the European Union.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic gripping Europe post-Brexit trade talks have been put on hold between the UK and the EU as the pair attempt to deal with the deadly virus.
