Express.co.uk Brussels correspondent Joe Barnes explained that the EU’s mood shows that they have accepted a no deal Brexit is going to happen and insist it’s Britain’s fault. Barnes was joining presenter Rebecca Hutson and Head of News Paul Baldwin. Mr Baldwin began by asking whether Mr Barnes felt a last moment agreement was likely to occur between new Prime Minister Mr Johnson and the EU.

He asked: “Do you get any sense, Joe, that what might be happening here is what happens in the transfer window.

“In that, all the deals are done in the last minute of the last hour of the last day.

“All up until that is pushing and shoving and jockeying for position and elbowing.”

Mr Barnes agreed and added: “That is the classic EU style, isn’t it.

“The candlelit summits, waiting until the coffee has gone cold. But, I don’t see that happening now.

“The mood is very much no deal is going to happen, it is going to be Britain’s fault.

“Because Britain had a deal that was offered and agreed by the British government and the EU.

“Now you have rejected it and want to rip it up so it will just be no deal.

“So what the kind of thinking is on October 17 which is the next European council summit.

“Boris Johnson versus 27 other European leaders will be a no deal summit.

“Where they come up with the final arrangements of what happens with a no deal.

“There won’t be a last-minute compromise unless they find a joint landing zone that is acceptable.

“From my kind of sources, they are saying that Boris Johnson and the EU are a million miles away at the moment.”

Mr Baldwin closed by reflecting on the EU inability to come to the table for further discussions despite being “diplomats.”

He emphasised that this attitude is what brought the EU and UK to a Brexit impasse in the first place.

It comes as Prime Minister Mr Johnson has vowed to pull the UK out of the European Union with or without a deal by the end of October this year.

The new Conservative leader has said the European Union need to make changes to the controversial backstop element within the withdrawal deal if a new agreement is to be reached before the deadline.

EU leaders have stuck firm insisting the withdrawal agreement, which was secured by Theresa May, will not be altered.
