The Everton forward hit 58mph in a 50mph zone in Runcorn, Cheshire, and had been due to stand trial, having previously pleaded not guilty to exceeding the speed limit and failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver. However, the striker, who has 11 caps for England, changed his plea to the first charge to guilty and the second offence was withdrawn.

Calvert-Lewin, 24, was also issued with three penalty points at Chester Magistrates’ Court today.

Chair of the bench, Roy Baron, ordered him to pay a £900 fine, £620 costs and a £90 surcharge.

The total amount of £1,610 must be paid within 28 days, reports Cheshire Live.

The court heard Calvert-Lewin, who used to play for boyhood club Sheffield United, already had three penalty points on his licence as a result of another speeding offence committed in February 2020.

The maximum fine for the offence is £1,000 but, due to the guilty plea, this was dropped by 10%.

Michael O’Kane, prosecuting, said the defendant was caught speeding on the A533 near Runcorn on August 18 last year.

Calvert-Lewin, of Altrincham, Greater Manchester, did not attend the hearing but his lawyer, Barry Warburton, confirmed he had changed his plea to guilty and said he deserved some credit for this “even at this late stage”.

Mr Warburton added: “He has got a disposable income in excess of £450 a week. I think you are probably aware he is a professional footballer.”

Calvert-Lewin was awarded Everton’s Player of the Year after a successful 2020-21 season but this campaign has been hindered by injury.
