Election 2019: Celebrities will NOT change our vote! Express readers reject endorsements
A massive 97 percent of this who took part rejected the idea their vote could be swayed by the backing of an actor or pop star and just three percent admitted they could be persuaded to vote for a particular party by a celebrity endorsement. A total of 5,589 people took part in the online poll which asked readers “would a celebrity endorsement change your vote?”. Some 5,417 said no, 132 said yes and 40 said not sure.
Household names have flocked to parties across the political spectrum up but some groups have benefitted from more support than others.
Hugh Grant, who enjoyed heart-throb status in the 90s thanks to a number of romantic movies including Notting Hill, joined Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates door-knocking and campaigning last week.
Londoners were surprised to open their doors to the Love Actually star when he joined Lib Dem candidate Luciana Berger who is hoping to unseat Tory Mike Freer from the Finchley and Golders Green seat he has held since 2010.
Grant also headed over to east London to join Labour’s Faiza Shaheen at a street rally in Chingford and Woodford Green.
But his appearance in the constituency held by Tory grandee Iain Duncan Smith did not pass off without controversy.
An anti-racism campaigner confronted the actor demanding to know why he was supporting a “racist” party, while holding a placard which read “Corbyn supported terrorists – unfit to be PM”.
Funnyman Lee Hurst backed Nigel Farage’s group in the run up to the December 12 election but was left disappointed when more than 300 candidates were pulled out of the race.
The comedian wrote on Twitter: “The Brexit Party not standing in my area so will have to see if there’s an independent standing or I’ll be passing on this general election.
“I might have to stand myself next time just so I can cast a bloody vote.”

Best-selling author Matt Haig would no doubt have persuaded at least a few voters to back the Green Party when he came out in support of the group.
In October Mr Haig took to Twitter to hit out at Labour for trying to promote themselves as an environmentally friendly party.
He said: “Labour trying to stamp out the Green Party vote by saying Corbyn has more credentials because he ‘has an allotment’. “
Fans of singer-songwriters and former Oasis member Liam Gallagher could turn to their favourite rocker for inspiration on who to vote for.
The 47-year-old has thrown his weight behind the Greens.
In November he told The Mirror: “It’s the only party that makes sense.”
He said: “I’m voting for the Green Party: the rest of them are all selfish and clueless.
“I’m a big fan of David Attenborough and watching his show on the Antarctic recently was really sad.
“It’s worrying. We need to do more to make this world a more healthy environment to live in.”
And those who love a pint and a roast at their local Wetherspoons’ could be swayed by the company’s boss Tim Martin’s support for the Tories.
Meanwhile rapper Stormzy has called on people to vote for Jeremy Corbyn, accusing Boris Johnson of being “sinister” in his endorsement post on social media.
