Elderly woman 'had bag placed over her head' in 'birthday cash' burglary
A 21st birthday party is a key part of the garda investigation into the aggravated burglary of an elderly woman at her home in the early hours of last Saturday.
The incident occurred at around 2.30am when an elderly woman living at Carrickbanagher near Colooney, in Co Sligo was threatened and assaulted by a male intruder.
It is understood a bag was placed over the woman’s head during the incident, the Sligo Champion reports.
The intruder, who was wearing dark clothing, left the house on foot with birthday cards and a large sum of cash which the woman had brought home from a 21st birthday party held earlier in the night in a pub in a village some 13km away.
She had left the party early and gardaí believe she was targeted for the cash which she was bringing home as a favour.
The alarm was raised when another family member, who was also at the party, returned home a short time later. The woman was taken to Sligo University Hospital and treated for injuries described as non life threatening. She was very shook up by the incident.
Gardaí have carried out door-to-door enquiries in the area. No arrests have been made to date, gardaí confirmed to Independent.ie.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in Drumfin between midnight and 3am and witnessed any suspicious activity to contact them.
