As the weather becomes damp and wet, males are given the cue to find a mate in warm, dry homes around the nation. Males tend to live outside around the year, while females are homebound across the seasons.

House spiders are a common sight in the UK, with the species tending to live in nooks and crannies of homes, sheltered from view and safe from predators.

The UK has around 650 species of spider. Twelve of these have been recorded as being able to bite humans – and these tend to be the largest of spiders.

The largest spider in the UK is called the Cardinal spider which grows to a leg span of around 12cm wide.

The giant house spider is one of the fastest and largest spiders you can spot in Britain and across Europe.

It can run at a speed of around 2ft per second. These spiders build messy-looking webs with a funnel at one end, where the spider would hang around and hide, waiting for its prey to be caught. The web threads do not have adhesive properties.

According to statistics, around 3.5 to 6.1 percent of the world’s population are scared of spiders, a fear known as arachnophobia.

However, there are several hacks available to deter and prevent spiders from invading your home this autumn.

Repellents can be used around doors and windows leading to the outside.

Of these, many of them are available in shops, or alternative natural means can be used.

Peppermint, apple cider vinegar, eucalyptus and cinnamon are all effective at fending off the eight-legged intruders.

Another natural method is to encourage ladybirds to live in and around your house.

The red and black insects are capable of eating up to 50 other insects per day, and spiders are on their menu.

Regular cleaning is also another good method of preventing spiders in homes.

By removing cobwebs and cleaning around windows, helps to prevent the arachnids from having a safe place to live and hunt.

Adding a few drops of bleach to water when washing windows also act as a deterrent.

Some people have found success in using pets as spider killers. Cats in particular are fond of pouncing on spiders. Other more extreme measures have seen lizards and chameleons kept as pets to eat their way through the homes spider population.

Untidy homes also attract more spiders as the clutter gives them more places to hide and create their nests. Tidying up is a sure way of making places to hide harder.

Bowls of lemons, oranges and other citrus fruits also act as a repellent, with some suggesting keeping a bowl of such fruits around the house is a great way to keeping them at bay.

If extreme gaps and cracks are common around the house, filling these up with appropriate materials can also be a useful method.
