A man has been detained by police after appearing to hurl eggs at the King and Queen Consort in York.

Large crowds had gathered behind barriers, near the Micklegate Bar, ahead of a royal walkabout this morning.

The King and Queen Consort were being welcomed to York by city leaders when three eggs were thrown in their direction.

The man was heard to shout ‘this country was built on the blood of slaves’.

At least one egg reportedly landed on the road near King Charles, with none directly striking the monarch.

Police officers and royal security staff rushed to the scene and, in footage from the incident, can be seen tackling a man in the crowd.

Cries of ‘shame on you’ at him and ‘God save the King’ then broke out by angry members of the crowd.

Others near the incident held Union Jack flags aloft as the scuffle ensued.

Rebecca English, Royal Editor at the Daily Mail, wrote on Twitter: ‘Major incident here in York as a lone protestor tries to throw an egg at the king screaming that the country was built on the blood of slavery.

‘He is bundled to the ground.’

Charles and Camilla are visiting Yorkshire to carry out a number of engagements today.

The couple were ushered away by security staff after the eggs were deployed.

They were in York to attend the unveiling of a statue of Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since her death.
