Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, this week received the clearest sign yet that they will be sidelined from Royal Family life in the future. Earlier this week, the Earl of Wessex was snubbed for the key role of royal patron of the National Theatre. Daily Mail Diary Editor Richard Eden told Palace Confidential on MailPlus that while Camilla “loves the theatre,” it made more sense for Edward to receive the role.

He suggested that the snub was the clearest signal yet that Edward and his family will be sidelined going forward, as Prince Charles tries to slim down the monarchy.

Mr Eden said: “Camilla’s appointment at the National Theatre hasn’t been confirmed yet but it’s been rumoured.

“When the Queen gave that patronage to Meghan, it was a really big gesture.

“She was thinking, what would make Meghan feel welcome, and as a former actress, making her patron of the National Theatre made sense.

“But there was hardly any time that Meghan was involved in the National Theatre.”

He continued: “I would have liked it to have gone to Prince Edward, who loves the theatre, who used to work for Andrew Lloyd Webber.

“He would have been really enthusiastic. I’m sure Camilla will be great, she loves the theatre too but I just feel they are just sidelining Edward and his family.

“It’s an indication they are not seen as part of the future.”

It was first reported last week that the Duchess of Cornwall secured the key role where she will replace Meghan Markle.

Meghan, who was gifted the role in 2019, was stripped of the patronage last year when the Sussexes announced they would not return to royal life.

A source close to 74-year-old Camilla told The Times that she was “pretty miffed” to have lost out on the role in 2019.

The source said: “She really wanted it. She was pretty miffed when it went to Meghan, and will be all the more delighted to take it on now, after being disappointed not to get it the first time around.”

Earlier in the week, Mr Eden tweeted: “This couldn’t be a clearer sign that there will be no role for Prince Edward and his family in Prince Charles’s slimmed-down monarchy.

“Edward would have been a natural fit for this role.”

Edward and Sophie have two children, Lady Louise Windsor, 18, and James, Viscount Severn, 13, who are the Queen’s grandchildren.

The Earl of Wessex left Cambridge University in 1986 to carve out a career in the theatre.

He was involved with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production company, Really Useful Theatre Company.

On the other hand, Camilla is also a huge fan of the theatre and a champion of drama.

She is particularly keen to use the patronage to support the struggling industry, which was hit badly by the pandemic.
