Eco-zealots graffiti King Charles III portrait and claim ‘the world is on fire’

Eco activists spray King Charles portrait

Eco protesters attacked a portrait of King Charles III today graffitiing his painting with the slogan “the people are mightier than the lord” in a fossil fuels protest.

Climate activists This is Rigged used pink spray paint in their action, in a change of colour from the orange used by fellow green gallery stormers Just Stop Oil.

Video shared by the group online shows two protesters approaching the Victoria Crowe work in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh around 3pm today (July 26).

Using stencils, the pair outline what appears to be an oil droplet on the king and the words are sprayed to the left of the canvas.

A man appears to try and intervene with the protest but both activists finish their work before sitting down in front of the painting.

Police Scotland said two people, aged 28 and 21, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

In a statement emailed to Expresss.co.uk, This is Rigged said: “Today two people with This is Rigged sprayed the slogan of the Highland Land League, “the people are mightier than a lord” onto a painting of King Charles III. The King is receiving a 45% pay increase in two years, while most people struggle through a cost of living crisis.

“Meanwhile, the world is on fire, with wildfires raging in Algeria, Turkey, Rhodes and Italy, and even Cannich, in the Scottish Highlands for ten days last month.

“Mainland Europe is enduring temperatures of 48 degrees. Scotland is facing an unprecedented shortage of water, and this is likely the least extreme summer of the rest of our lives.”

The wording continued: “This is Rigged will continue to take action until the Scottish government vocally oppose all new oil and gas licenses and secure a fair and fully funded transition for workers to renewable energy.”

A spokesperson for National Galleries of Scotland told STV News: “This afternoon there was a protest at National Galleries of Scotland: Portrait.

“We have closed the Modern Portrait room. The rest of the gallery is open as normal for visitors. At the moment we are assessing the impact but there appears to be no sign of damage to any actual artwork.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of protestors at the National Galleries of Scotland: Portrait shortly after 3.05pm on Wednesday, July 26.

“Two people, aged 28 and 21, have been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”
