A man has died after timber fell from a lorry on to the car he was driving.

Emergency services were called to New Road in Newhaven, East Sussex, at 7.33am on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old driver, who was from Burgess Hill and in a BMW, died at the scene, Sussex Police said.

A 32-year-old man from Eastbourne was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The road remained closed for a time as investigation and recovery work was carried out, and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
