King Willem-Alexander took a picture of his second daughter Princess Alexia, on the day she left her homeland for Wales to begin a two-year course at UWC Atlantic College in Wales. The Dutch monarch’s photograph shows the 16-year-old princess in a casual outfit on the doorstep of her royal residence in The Hague. 

In the picture, the teenager smiled while carrying two heavy-looking black bags and a face covering.

The photograph was shared on the Dutch Royal Family’s official Instagram account yesterday, with the following caption: “Princess Alexia is leaving for the United World College of the Atlantic (UWC Atlantic College) in Llantwit Major in Wales.

“She will attend her International Baccalaureate for the next two years.

“Princess Alexia completed the fourth year at the Christelijk Gymnasium in The Hague last school year.” 

Another royal who has treated fans to pictures of her family as a means to mark milestones and birthdays is Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince William’s wife is a keen amateur photographer and has regularly released on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official Instagram account snaps of her children.

On April 23, Kate shared a picture of a smiling Prince Louis carrying a backpack while on a shiny red balance bike.

The portrait was shared to mark the little royal’s third birthday, falling just as he was starting to attend nursery school.   

A few weeks later, the palace released a picture of Princess Charlotte, again taken by Kate, to mark her sixth birthday.

And hours before July 22, when Prince George turned eight, the Cambridges shared a new portrait of their firstborn by the Duchess.

Over the past years, Kate has also shared pictures she took to mark the birthday of Prince William or Father’s Day.

Princess Alexia, sister of the future Queen of The Netherlands Princess Catharina-Amalia, won’t be the only European royal attending UWC over the next two years. 

Princess Leonor, the eldest daughter of King Felipe V and Queen Letizia of Spain, has also taken residence at the college in Llantwit Major.

Yesterday, she was photographed saying goodbye to her sister Infanta Sofia and her parents at Adolfo Suarez Barajas Airport in Madrid.

Leonor, who left Spain for Wales yesterday, was seen hugging tightly her sister and mother.

She also embraced her father before exchanging what appeared to be a smile under their face coverings. 

The Welsh college, which aims “to promote international understanding through education”, has been favoured by many royals in the past.

King Willem-Alexander is one of the school’s alumni, together with Belgium’s King Philippe.

Moreover, Belgium’s future Queen, Princess Elisabeth, graduated from this college in May 2020.

After completing the Welsh school, Elisabeth completed a one-year course at the Royal Military Academy in Belgium. 

In October, she is set to return to the UK as she has enrolled on the three-year History and Politics course at Lincoln College in Oxford.

The UWC school was founded in 1962 by German educator Kurt Hahn.

Mr Hahn had previously founded another school popular among royals – Gordonstoun, famously attended by Prince Philip and Prince Charles among other members of the House of Windsor.
