Michelle Pollard appeared to be having a fit at the Centrepoint homeless centre in Manchester before she lashed out at emergency workers. The 43-year-old then bit one of the paramedics on the thumb, piercing his latex glove and drawing blood.

Two paramedics were trying to treat Pollard in a toilet cubicle at the homeless hostel when she became aggressive, Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard yesterday.

The defendant, who was intoxicated at the time, stood up on the toilet and attempted to attack the two emergency workers with the cistern lid.

As one paramedic stopped her using the porcelain lid as a weapon, his colleague tried telling Pollard to calm down during the attack on July 4, 2019.

In a statement read out by prosecutor William Staunton, the victim said: “Michelle then bit me on my left thumb. It caused a lot of pain and she wouldn’t let go.

“She was really biting down. I pushed her to try and get her to let go.

“I then got out the room, I was in the shock.

“Due to the force of the bite she had bitten through my glove and broken the skin barrier, and drawn blood.”

Pollard was arrested on January 10, 2020 after being spotted “staggering and shouting” in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester.

She pleaded guilty to assault at an earlier court hearing, Manchester Evening News reported.

Mitigating, David Morton said his client has now stopped drinking and had control of her alcohol dependency.

He said: “She was not wanted by police.

“And to her credit she has moved forward in very positive ways.

“She has very tragic background and suffers from an emotional personality disorder.”

Judge Maurice Greene said he accepted Pollard had a “very difficult life and a very difficult background”.

Sentencing Pollard to a suspended sentence, Judge Greene said: “He was a paramedic who was doing no more than his job.

“It’s a very difficult job helping the public. He was trying to help you and you treated him in that way.”

Pollard, of Dipton Walk, Manchester, was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

She was also ordered to carry out 30 rehabilitation requirement days.
