Drunk man got in police car with his takeaway, honked horn then assaulted cops
A man threatened to kill two police officers after climbing into their car with a takeaway after drinking too much.
Henry Mullen, 38, clambered into the car in Dunfermline, Fife, on June 15 last year while the pair of cops briefly left their vehicle to get a location for a mental health call.
Fiscal depute Alistair McDermid told Dunfermline Sheriff Court in Scotland the officers heard the horn of the car sounding and saw the defendant crawling out of the passenger side.
They approached Mullen, and he was ‘visibly intoxicated, slurring his words and holding a bag of takeaway food’.
One of them told Mullen to move on – but he replied they ‘can’t take a joke’ and said ‘there’s a reason why you’re all hated’.
A short time later they found Mullen causing problems outside the Tappie Toories pub, and the officers arrested him while other cops took over their previous call,
As they walked him to the police car, Mullen lashed out and kicked one officer in the leg and spat in the face of the other. He also threatened to kill them.
He was taken to Dunfermline police station where he calmed down, apologised and said he’d ‘had too much to drink’.
Mullen, of Blamey Crescent in Cowdenbeath, admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner in Bridge Street and High Street on various occasions that evening.
He further pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and was sentenced to unpaid work.
Sentencing, sheriff Susan Duff imposed a community payback order of 100 hours.
Defence lawyer Gordon Martin said his client was unable to explain his behaviour, but said he acknowledged he had drunk too much alcohol.
