Drivers scramble for cash as man throws $200,000 out window 'to bless others'
A man threw $200,000 out of his car window on a busy highway in the US to ‘bless others with gifts of money’.
As a result, people driving down Interstate 5 in Oregon, where it happened, stopped their vehicles and jumped out to grab the $100 bills.
Oregon State Police said Colin Davis McCarthy, 38, threw the money out of his car window in the city of Eugene at around 7.20pm on April 11.
Mr McCarthy, who was not charged with any crime, told officers he was ‘doing well [financially] and wanted to bless others with gifts of money,’ police explained in a statement to KVAL-TV.
The cash is thought to have come from a shared family bank account he had access to, according to UPI.com.
Officers had warned Mr McCarthy he could be charged with littering or creating a hazard on the highway, and he agreed to stop throwing the money.
Captain Kyle Kennedy of the Oregon State Police said other drivers stopped on the highway and quickly collected the banknotes.
‘OSP is urging the public not [to] go searching for money on the highway, which is very dangerous and contributes to a hazardous condition,’ Kennedy told OregonLive.
Capt. Kennedy said officers searched the highway for any leftover bills to ‘prevent further hazards’, but couldn’t find any.
In 2021, residents in Frome, Somerset received money and notes through their letter boxes from an unknown person in what appeared to be acts of arbitrary kindness.
The police, however, weren’t too happy and to the dismay of householders tried to track the man down.
‘What a strange world we live in when people are afraid of someone doing something kind,’ one resident said.
