Driver left embarrassed after beach parking space sees van float out to sea
A driver had to watch his van float out to sea after parking it on a beach.
A driver in Bridlington Beach, East Yorkshire, was left feeling rather embarrassed after his van floated away when the tide came in.
The incident occurred after the motorist parked his black commercial van on the sandy beach on July 31.
However, the next morning, onlookers were surprised to see the vehicle drifting approximately 50 feet (15 meters) from the shoreline.
RNLI teams swiftly responded to the situation, dispatching a quick response craft at 6am.
Body-worn footage captured the sight of the driver’s compartment and loading bay completely flooded with water, with parking tickets amusingly displayed on the passenger side window.
Fortunately, the Coastguard confirmed the owner of the van was found nearby and was “safe and well”. After ensuring no one else was inside, rescue teams proceeded to recover the stranded vehicle.
A Coastguard spokesman said: “Upon arrival at scene, the van was located and immediately checked out by the Bridlington ILB for occupants.
“Thankfully the owner of the vehicle was located nearby safe and well. A plan will be made by owner for a recovery later today.
“A reminder to public that the beaches are not the place to take vehicles. Remember if you see a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
RNLI Volunteer Helm Ash Traves said: “We managed to get the ILB launched this morning and made good speed on a calm sea reaching the van in 10 minutes.
“We made a thorough and safe search of the van and ensured that no persons were trapped inside.”
Social media users couldn’t resist poking fun at the van owner’s unfortunate predicament. One user commented: “You can’t park there, Sir…” while another quipped, “Someone thought that it was a cheap parking space!!”
