Drink driver avoided ban by giving his brother's details to police

A man avoided a driving ban after telling police he was his brother when he was breathalysed.

Zuhir Nassrat, 21, lied after being pulled over when he was spotted driving erratically down Deansgate in Manchester City Centre following a night out with friends.

He continued the charade in court but police were tipped off four months later and he was arrested again.

As a result his brother, who lives in Dubai, will have a criminal record until the offence is officially removed. Despite what Nassrat did, his older brother has forgiven him.

Judge Anthony Cross QC told him: ‘The consequence has been that your brother, who works overseas and has got a degree and managed to find a job, his good name has literally been dragged through the courts by you.

‘Quite how he comes to forgive you I don’t know, but he does.’

Nassrat, from Oldham, pulled over at 3.25am on January 23 after spotting a police car behind the car he was in with his friend.

He then threw the keys on the floor and got into the passenger seat but a police officer said he had seen him at the wheel.

After appearing at court for the drink driving offence he was given a 12-month driving ban and ordered to pay £205.

However, after admitting to perverting the course of justice he was given a three-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months, banned from driving for 18 months and told to pay £510 in costs.
