Double tragedy as mother dies just weeks after son,18, killed in horror crash with friends

South Yorkshire Police are yet to conclude their investigation into the crash in Rotherham late last month. All three of the boys – Martin Ward, 18, Mason Hall and Ryan Geddes, both 19 – died at the scene.

Less than two weeks later, an investigation has begun into the death of Martin’s mother, Sara Jane Smith.

The cause of her death is yet to be confirmed.

Countless tributes have been posted on social media by friends and relatives who are shocked by the sudden repetition of tragedy.

“Actually can’t believe I’m writing this after everything that has happened this year already,” read one tribute on Facebook.

“RIP Sara Jane Smith many memories I’ll never forget.”

“This world cannot get any worse – RIP Sara Jane Smith,” read another.

“There are no words to explain how cruel this world is.”

These awful deaths come in the same year as two other relatives were killed in a car crash, according to Yorkshire Live.

After their death, Ms Smith told The Star that Mason had been “like a stepson” to her.

“Mason was a very close friend of Martin’s. They have basically grown up together and he was like a stepson to me,” she said.

“Martin was a lovable little rug and he had the biggest heart out of most people I know.

“They were both such loving kids and will be so sadly missed.

“This shouldn’t have happened, they were far too young to have this happen. They hadn’t even lived their lives.”

Family and friends have now been tasked with grieving another tragic loss.

Some appear to have taken solace in the fact that mother and son – among others – are together again elsewhere.
