Meghan Markle’s mother Doria Ragland slammed Thomas Markle after she said he became involved in the “circus” surrounding the Sussexes’ wedding.
The Duchess of Sussex was reportedly left embarrassed by the incident, which saw Thomas Markle collaborate secretly with a British photographer in a series of images in 2018.
When the media called Markle out on the incident, he claimed it was “mistake” and apologised to the Sussexes who had previously warned him the press would “eat him alive”.
Speaking on the issue, Doria Ragland said: “I was absolutely stunned that Tom would become part of this circus. I felt sad that the media would run with this. That he would capitalise [on this].
“Certainly as a parent, that’s not what you do. It’s not parenting.”
The images were reportedly sold to various publications around the world for up to $100,000 (£82,000) with Markle getting a 30 percent cut.
In a 2020 Channel 5 documentary, Thomas Markle noted that the photographs would “sell forever” and that he still received royalties for the images.
Shortly after the incident, Thomas Markle, who was set to walk Meghan down the aisle at her wedding, broke the story to TMZ that he wouldn’t be attending at all.
In the documentary, Meghan said: “Paps and journalists immediately were following him all day everyday. The unravelling happened that week when he wouldn’t pick up my call. And instead you’re talking to TMZ.”
The documentary then shows the TMZ segment announcing that Thomas Markle had told the outlet that he wouldn’t be attending the royal wedding.
The Duchess added: “And I’m finding out that you’re not coming to our wedding through a tabloid.”
Thomas Markle said that he could not attend the wedding due to an illness, he claims that he had heart surgery just days before the ceremony.
“I hate the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle,” Thomas Markle told TMZ at the time.
However, there were subsequent media reports that Markle did not undergo the surgery and that the incident was an attempt to distract from the staged photos.

The comments about the episode by Doria Ragland come in her first interview for the Netflix doc in which she promised to give “a little bit of my experience”.
“I’m ready to have my voice heard, that’s for sure,” Ragland added.
She described Prince Harry as “the one” for her daughter and recalled her first meeting with the “handsome man with red hair” with “really great manners.”
She recalled her daughter, then-actress Meghan Markle, whispering to her on the phone that the pair were dating, adding: “The last five years has been challenging, yeah.”
