Cardiff council officers have granted planning permission for the plans, which will see the 105ft (32m)-high and 30ft (9m)-wide flag cover eight-storeys of the new building. The vinyl sign will be attached to windows of the corner of the building. The UK Government said the use of the flag was “normal practice for a project of this size and significance”, but the plans have been heavily criticised by some social media users.

Several Scottish nationalists responded to the news on Twitter, with one person warning the Government not to try anything similar in Scotland.

They wrote: “They better not think they are flying that s**t in Scotland.”

Another person added: “@scotgov time to break out the 12-storey flags for display on every council building in Scotland.

“Even if the building is one 4 story! #indynow.”

Other social media users suggested the huge flag could backfire, and end up evoking nationalist sentiment within Wales.

They wrote: “Coz that’ll help anything.

“Shoving patriotism down people’s throats instead of addressing the actual issues between the nations.”

Another user said: “Putting up a hideous edifice which doesn’t even incorporate any part of the local flag is possibly not the best way to win over the locals.”

A third sarcastically wrote: “Excellent! That’ll persuade Welsh people to stay in the union.”

But many people defended the Government’s plans and didn’t understand why it was being so heavily criticised.

One person said: “Pretty sure most countries put their national flag on government buildings so I don’t really see what’s wrong here.”

Another user wrote: “Flags flying on government buildings, just like any other country before the moaners start.”

One person was fully in favour of the large UK flag, and called for it to be flown off all Government buildings.

They said: “Good! About time this was done over all govt buildings including schools, colleges and universities.”

The new building in Cardiff has been named Tŷ William Morgan/William Morgan House and is planned to house civil servants from several departments, including the HMRC tax service, Cabinet Office and the Department for International Trade.

The building will have capacity to host full UK cabinet meetings.

A UK government spokesman said: “Tŷ William Morgan is a significant UK government building and is the first of its kind in Wales.

“As is practice with similar UK government sites across the United Kingdom and around the world, it will feature the Union flag as part of its visual branding.

“The flag of Wales is flown at Tŷ William Morgan, which also contains other specifically Welsh branding, while the name of the new building was chosen to reflect the UK government’s investment in Wales and Welsh culture.”

Permission has been granted for the flag until May 1, 2026.
