Speaking to GMB on Monday, the NHS Doctor dismissed the idea that young people should have to be persuaded to get a coronavirus vaccine with fast-food vouchers which are likely to be paid for by the “taxpayer” or out of the “NHS” budget. Dr Amir said it was “not the right way to go” for the government and called on young people to simply step forward. His comments come as the government are considering plans to incentivise young people to get the jab through what some are calling “bribes” by offering vouchers on takeaway apps including Deliveroo as well as free taxis to and from vaccination centres. It comes as only 67 per cent of people aged 18-29 have had a first dose.  But campaigners say the move goes against the governments healthy eating plans.

Dr Amir said: “Education is key here and trying to encourage them to pick up the vaccine through doing the right thing essentially,…

“Rather than providing them with vouchers!

“It depends who is paying for those vouchers – if the cost is coming out of the NHS or taxpayers money, I don’t agree with that.

“They should just be encouraged to do so, there should be campaigns to do so.”

He added: “I do think these kind of incentive schemes that might cost the taxpayer are not the right way to go.

“Young people should just come forward for it.

“You don’t need a £5 voucher to get a McDonald’s, that’s not healthy anyway!

“Just come and get the vaccine!”
