The Queen is set to meet Ms Merkel at Windsor Castle on Friday, at the end of the monarch’s Royal Week in Scotland. This will mark the second meeting between the two leaders in just a few weeks.  

Ms Merkel was among the world leaders to take part in the reception hosted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on July 11 at the Eden Project. 

On that occasion, the Queen exchanged a few words with the German Chancellor before joining her and the other politicians in the traditional family portrait. 

Her Majesty, who was clearly in high spirits, joked as the photographer was taking pictures of the G7 summit attendees. 

She said: “Are you supposed to be looking as if you’re enjoying yourself?”  

The leaders around the Queen laughed as Mr Johnson emphatically answered: “Yes”.

Mr Johnson, who was sitting near the Queen, added: “We have been enjoying ourselves – in spite of appearances.”
