Fuel has been in short supply across the UK and many Brits have queued for hours to fill their cars. Users on Twitter suggested Brits #ClapForPetrol at 8pm on Thursday.

The original Clap for Carers campaign became a weekly occurrence during Britain’s first national lockdown.

Millions of people in Britain, including the Prime Minister and the Prince of Wales, spent their Thursday evenings thanking NHS staff and other key workers.

Images and clips from across the UK showed residents standing outside their houses clapping.

Others even banged pots and pans in support of the countless NHS frontline workers who stood as vanguard in the face of the pandemic.

But following the UK’s fuel shortage, Brits have started to joke that the UK should emulate the heartfelt message.

Replying to the Transport Department’s tweet revealing new measures, @redrob24 wrote: “#ClapForPetrol 8pm every Thursday.”

@billymunroe asked: “What day is the clap for petrol tank drivers?”

@fastcarspete even tried to trick other users into joining the clapathon.

“Don’t forget folks,” he said.

“At 9pm we’re supposed to clap for petrol station workers.”

@ohitore also tweeted: “Maybe if we clap for the petrol stations everyone’s tanks will be full x”.

Christopher Snowdon from the Institute of Economic Affairs joked: “Hearing rumours of a three week ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown starting at midnight to prevent petrol stations being overwhelmed.”
