Donald Trump’s ‘creepy’ Kate Middleton jibe revealed as NATO summit looms
Donald Trump is in London for the 70th NATO summit and will attend a reception for world leaders hosted by the Queen at Buckingham palace later today. Her Majesty will formally receive her guests alongside the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge will join Prince Edward and Princess Anne in welcoming leaders – without Prince William, who is on tour in Kuwait.
When the US President came on a state visit in June, many were on the alert for gaffes from the President, after a previous visit saw him break protocol by walking in front of the Queen.
However, he once caused much more serious offence to royal fans as he weighed in on Kate’s decision to sue over intrusive photographs.
In 2012, a French magazine published pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless on a private family holiday.
Shockingly, the President – who was then best known as the reality TV star of the US Apprentice – appeared to blame Kate herself for the intrusion of privacy.
He tweeted: “Kate Middleton is great – but she shouldn’t be sunbathing in the nude – only herself to blame.”
Mr Trump then added: “Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on Kate!”
The comments sparked outrage online, with royal watchers criticising Mr Trump for his “creepy” take on the situation.
The decision that Kate and William made to sue over the publication of the photographs was a watershed moment, as before then many experts had predicted that the Royal Family, as public figures, would not be successful in court over privacy matters.
However, it was found that in the private chateau, the royal couple should have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also made a landmark decision to sue the press in recent weeks.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched legal action over the publication of private letters from the Duchess’ father Thomas Markle.
However, President Trump has also had some words over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their recent media appearances.

Speaking to Nigel Farage on LBC in November, he said: “Well I’ve been watching her interviews and I’ve seen it and she’s taken it very personally.”
However, he added: ”I don’t know her, I will say I’ve met Harry and he’s great.
“He is really a fine young man, the whole family is, I think the whole family is terrific.”
Harry and Meghan will not be present at the NATO reception this evening, as they are away on family leave with baby Archie.
In 2013, the President also had some bizarre words about Prince George.
He replied to a fan who had tweeted: “Wish they’d name the royal baby after @realDonaldTrump.”
Mr Trump said: “Great idea after having built the greatest golf course in the World!”
This appears to be a reference to the Trump International Golf Links, which is near Aberdeen and was completed in 2012 amid a slew of protests from local residents and environmentalist groups.
The President’s June visit to London sparked some protests, and more demonstrations are expected during this weeks summit, according to the BBC.
