Donald Trump makes fun of Mitch McConnell and agrees with crowd he should retire

Former President Donald Trump added insult to injury by celebrating a crowd chanting for an 81-year-old Republican leader to retire.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was heckled while speaking at the Fancy Farm picnic, an annual political event in his home state of Kentucky.

Part of McConnell’s speech on Saturday was inaudible as the crowd began booing him and calling for him to retire. McConnell continued speaking into a microphone, acting unfazed by the dissenting cries.

‘I AGREE!’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday night, along with a video clip of the episode.

‘“BOOOOO—RETIRE, RETIRE, RETIRE—BOOOOO!!!”’

The event happened less than two weeks after McConnell froze mid-speech during a weekly Republican leadership briefing at the US Capitol, prompting questions around his health and whether he is fit to serve in government.

On Saturday, McConnell finished off by telling the crowd that ‘this is my 28th Fancy Farm and I want to assure you it’s not my last’.

‘The people of this state have chosen me seven times to do this job, and I want you to know how grateful I am,’ continued McConnell, according to CNN.

A spokesperson for McConnell told the Daily Mail on Monday of the latest incident: ‘It wouldn’t be Fancy Farm if Democrats weren’t heckling every Republican and vice versa – it’s been a very spirited event for decades.’

When McConnell froze during a press conference on July 26, fellow Republicans escorted him away from the podium after he did not seem to respond to them asking if he was good to continue. McConnell returned to the presser a few minutes later and when asked if it was linked to his concussion earlier this year, he replied: ‘No, I’m fine.’

Trump, 77, showed no hesitation in making fun of McConnell, despite possibly having to work with him in the future if he wins the 2024 presidential election.

It is far from the only occasion in recent time that Trump has bashed fellow political figures.

A week ago during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, Trump called President Joe Biden a ‘dumb son of a b***h’.

‘We have somebody that’s not at the top of his game, never was at the top of a game, never was,’ said Trump. ‘We have a guy who is a dumb son of a b***h.’
