Donald Trump criticises London lockdown saying it's 'worse than problem itself'

Donald Trump has criticised the decision to put London and the South East into a strict tier four lockdown.

The outgoing US President laid into Boris Johnson after the British PM announced stringent new measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Sharing a BBC News clip on Twitter of Mr Johnson announcing the new rules, Mr Trump said: ‘We don’t want to have lockdowns. The cure cannot be worse than the problem itself!’

He also shared a similar clip from ITV News with the comment: ‘The entire WORLD is being badly hurt by the China Virus, but if you listen to the Fake News Lamestream Media, and Big Tech, you would think that we are the only one.

‘No, but we are the Country that developed vaccines, and years ahead of schedule!’

The US has been devastated by the coronavirus outbreak, logging 17.6million cases and 315,000 deaths – making it the world’s worst hit nation.

Although individual states have imposed tight restrictions, Mr Trump has rallied against lockdowns and the need to wear masks during his time in the presidency.

Christmas has effectively been cancelled for millions of people living in the UK’s worst hit areas after people were banned from mixing indoors over the holidays.

Those living in tiers one, two and three can still meet up but social distancing rules are being relaxed only for Christmas Day in an abrupt U-turn on the previous bubble rules.

President-elect Joe Biden has also ruled out a nationwide lockdown in the US, despite the worsening problems caused by the pandemic.

Speaking last month he said there were ‘no circumstances’ in which he would require a ‘total shutdown.’

It comes as vaccination programmes began in the US after the Pfizer and Moderna jabs were both granted approval.

The Government is aiming to administer 20 million doses to states by the first week of January.

Announcing the latest restrictions at a No 10 news conference, Mr Johnson said he was taking the actions with a ‘heavy heart’, but the scientific evidence – suggesting a new strain of the virus is up to 70% more transmissible – had left him with no choice.

In London, hundreds of people have been seen trying to flee the capital after the new rules were announced.
