Dogs at polling stations are back with the cutest part of any General Election

The polls are officially open, with people able to go and cast their vote from 7am until 10pm today.

It’s important – and we urge you to go and do it – but what is (arguably) just as important is taking your dog with you.

Every self-respecting pet needs to be tagged in a photo from a polling station, in a tradition dating back… well, not quite as long as the UK’s parliament, but quite a long time anyway.

Each year, the hashtag #dogsatpollingstations trends, and this year is no different.

Plenty of good boys have already gone along to give their owners moral support in deciding who they want to run the country for the next five years.

Here are some of our favourites so far…

This golden angel, who’s so well behaved he didn’t even need to be tied up

These tinselated cuties, who are also very good at walking in sync

This mournful pug who is worried its tactical voting plan could backfire

A patriotic pup with a poppy

One who really wanted to come into the station too

These two in Oxford who just want to respect the democratic process

Doozer, who made his first trip to a polling station today along with Sprocket

This bilingual pooch

This one, who is most concerned with issues of security

And this one, who is focused on the economy

Even Boris Johnson got in on the act, bringing his dog Dilyn to vote with him

Here are some more of our favourite four-legged voters.

NB: Dogs cannot actually vote. They cannot be entered onto the electoral register and also cannot hold Biro pens to mark their choice on the ballot paper.

But we all know people really just vote the way their dogs tell them to.

Dogs: whoever wins the keys to 10 Downing Street, you are the true winners of this election in our hearts.
