Dog turns up 100 miles from home after bolting from fireworks nine months ago
A dog who was so spooked by fireworks that he bolted out of his family home has finally been found – more than 100 miles away.
Uno ran away from Theresa McGailey’s Wiltshire home in November – before being found living as a stray last week.
The Yorkie-shih tzu cross’ nine month ordeal came to an end on July 26, when Theresa, 53, said she was immensely happy to hear he had been found.
Uno, who is seven, had left Theresa’s grandchildren Malachy, 11, and Shakiya, 9, devastated, when he ran away in terror through a hole in the garden fence.
Theresa, from Swindon, was told her pet was living in Weymouth, Dorset.
She explained: ‘I can’t describe how happy I am.
‘It gives people hope that if you’ve lost your dog there’s a chance that they can still come home.
‘It was heartbreaking to see my grandchildren get so upset and suffer for month.
‘Uno was absolutely fine, as soon as he saw me he came running up to me and was licking me.
‘The feeling was so immense, just happiness and relief that he was back, relief that there when nothing wrong with him.’
It is not clear how the dog managed to travel 100 miles from home but it is thought the dog may have spent some time living with another person.
But Uno was microchipped so Medivets and police knew Theresa was the rightful owner – much to her grandchildren’s delight.
Theresa said: ‘My granddaughter got a bit teary and he was licking her and he sat with her the whole time.’
Having looked for him everywhere, putting posts on lost animal social media pages and sticking posters up, Theresa eventually received a phone call out of the blue.
‘They asked: “Is this is Theresa? Have you been in Weymouth?”,’ she explained.
‘Then they said: “We have a little dog here, we’ve scanned him.”
‘I started to get emotional and they told me to have a cup of tea and phone them back.’
Two days later, on Wednesday, July 28, Theresa made the trip to the seaside town to finally be reunited with Uno.
