A dog that was severely injured in a brutal attack was found burried alive by a horrified member of the public.

The starving American Bulldog was lifted from the hole and rushed to the vets.

She was found bloodied and freezing cold.

The three-year-old also had a punctured lung, broken ribs, and a significant brain injury that were all thought to be caused by blunt force trauma.

The dog, who appeared to have had pups, was put to sleep by an emergency vet team as a member of an animal welfare charity held her in their arms, reports Belfast Live.

Police investigating the incident are conducting checks of the location where the dog was found, checking CCTV in the area, speaking with residents and conducting house-to-house enquiries.

Ballyarnett Neighbourhood Inspector Ryan Robb, said: “We are aware of the level of concern and anger in relation to this absolutely sickening and shocking act, and we are liaising with Derry City and Strabane District Council.”

A source said: “The vet team moved as quickly as possible to ease her suffering, but this dog died having been in agony and terror.

“The final moments of her life were spent in starvation, then fear and pain as she was beaten and buried alive.

“The people who did this walk the streets of this country.”

An eyewitness to the dog’s trauma, reported seeing two men put her into a hole in the ground and pummel her with rocks and stones in the Ballyarnett area of Co Derry, Northern Ireland.

He reported seeing the men leave the area having placed rocks on top of the shallow grave.

The American Bulldog was still alive when the eyewitness lifted her out of the hole where she had been left.

With no owner immediately available, the vet contacted Pet FBI Rescue who took responsibility for the female dog and permission was given for the medical team to try to save her.

However on assessing her, the injuries she had been subjected to were so extreme and her pain and distress levels so extreme, it was decided the most humane course of action was to put her to sleep.

A spokesperson from Pet FBI Rescue said: “We have no words for this so will stick to the facts in the hope information can be provided on the depraved scum that inflicted such immense pain, suffering and immeasurable cruelty in the hope justice can be served.

“This afternoon a member of the public came across two males, approximately in their 20s burying this dog alive in a hole dug in the Ballyarnett area close to Cornshell, repeatedly beating her with rocks to keep her down and piling more rocks on top of her.

“She sustained brain damage, broken ribs and a collapsed lung to name a few of the horrific injuries inflicted.

“This soul’s suffering was ended and she was humanely put to sleep when the vet team determined she was too far gone and she passed away in the arms of our volunteer.

“Someone knows who the [people responsible for her suffering] are.

“Please, please contact the PSNI directly or ourselves privately to forward on any information regarding their identities. Please help get them off our streets.”

The PSNI confirmed officers in Derry received a report on Wednesday, March 15, of animal cruelty in relation to a dog who was found injured and partially buried in Ballyarnett Country Park.

Just after 5pm, it was reported that a dog had been located approximately 10 feet away from a pathway leading to Cornshell Fields by a member of the public who was able to take her to a local veterinary practice for treatment.

PSNI Inspector Robb said: “Our appeal is to anyone who may have been in the park yesterday and saw what happened, or anyone who knows who is responsible, to get in touch with us.

“It was also reported yesterday that two men were seen in the area at around the time the dog was found.

“One of the men is described as being approximately 5’10 tall, well-built and wore a distinctive camouflage hooded top with the hood pulled up.

“The second man is described as being of a similar height, of a slim build with black hair and wore a dark blue tracksuit.

“These men are believed to have left the Park, in the direction of Cornshell Fields. We would ask these men to get in touch with us.”

Derry City and Strabane Alliance Councillor Rachel Ferguson has said those who are cruel to animals must be caught and brought to justice.

She said: “How anyone can be so cruel to such a beautiful animal is unbelievable.

“I would pay tribute to the members of the public who reported this incident and to the vets who tried to help the dog in her last moments.

“If any member of the public has any information about this senseless attack, I would urge them to pass it to the police so those responsible can be brought to justice.”
