Prince Harry has been granted permission to wear his military uniform for a vigil as the Queen lies in state. Do you support the u-turn on Harry wearing his military uniform? Vote in our poll.

Queen Elizabeth II’s eight grandchildren will hold a 15-minute vigil in Westminster Hall on Saturday, ahead of the state funeral on Monday, September 19.

The Duke of Sussex will be given special dispensation to wear his military uniform after Prince Andrew was granted the honour as a “final mark of respect”.

A royal source told the Mirror: “Common sense has prevailed.”

They continued: “It was a ludicrous situation given the Duke of Sussex has served his country and is a highly respected member of the armed forces with everything he has done for veterans.

“It is important that the Queen’s grandchildren are all made to feel welcome and comfortable as they grieve their beloved grandmother together.”

Harry will be joined by his brother Prince William and cousins, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Zara and Peter Philips, Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn in the vigil on Saturday evening.

Harry served in the British Army for a decade, including on the front line in two tours of Afghanistan.

Following his decision to step down from his role as a working royal with Meghan Markle, he was stripped of his honorary military roles.

In a previous statement, the Duke’s spokesman said: “[Prince Harry] will wear a morning suit throughout events honouring his grandmother.

“His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears and we respectfully ask that focus remains on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

A royal source confirmed that the decision was made without intervention from Harry.

Only working members of the Royal Family – which Harry and Andrew are not – were allowed to wear military uniforms at ceremonial occasions for the late monarch.

An exception was made for Andrew to wear his uniform during the vigil of the Queen’s children, taking place on Friday.

Both Harry and Andrew will wear morning dress to the Queen’s funeral.
