Disappointed staff at UK’s worst services insist ‘we try our best’

Staff at a Welcome Break motorway service station voted Britain’s worst in a poll have disputed the results.

Hartshead Moor East Services on the M62 in West Yorkshire has a satisfaction rating well below other service stations around the country, including Moto on the M6 near Rugby, Warwickshire, which landed a 100 percent satisfaction rating.

The pit stop, built in the 1970s is definitely not the prettiest.

But staff, who say they’re doing their best, claim it’s made vast improvements over the years.

“They must have come on a bad day,” a 60-year-old car park cleaner called Janette Maud said.

“It’s a lot better than it was, we used to have Portaloos while the toilets were being renovated.

The old loos used to have lime green paint, something customers were not overly happy with, she said.

She told The Mirror: “Now we’ve got tiles and even a shower in the women’s loo.”

“We do our best – especially when you see the things we have to clean up. Like bottles of urine and poo in the lorry area.”

The services are right next to a Days Inn, offering cheap stays for as little as £39 a night.

According to the survey of more than 30,000 visitors by watchdog Transport Focus, it was the least popular service station out of 120 that were looked at.

A spokeswoman for Welcome Break said: “We are disappointed to see Hartshead Moor at the bottom of the list but are incredibly proud of the improvements that Welcome Break has made since last year.

“We expect to see a considerable improvement in scores for Hartshead Moor in next year’s survey.”

Despite its low popularity, it received a satisfaction rating of 84 percent. This might seem a lot but it’s a long way from the top spot for best services.

Moto on the M6 near Rugby, Warwickshire, was given a perfect 100 percent satisfaction rating.

John Morrison, a part-time coach driver who was interviewed at Hartshead Moor East Services, said the helpful staff make up for the station’s failings.

He added: “I think this survey is a bit out of order. I’ve been to far more grotty ones and the staff here are so good.”

The joint-second worst services were Bridgwater (on the M5 in Somerset), Hartshead Moor West, Lancaster South (on the M6 in Lancashire) and Toddington North and South (both on the M1 in Bedfordshire).

They each received a score of 88 percent.

The ranking was topped by Moto’s Rugby services on the M6 in Warwickshire for a second consecutive year which scored 100 percent after being rated highly for its food and drink, toilets and friendly staff.
