Rhys Bowler, 34, says he has coped with his Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in the past by using sex workers as it helps him “feel better”. He therefore argues sex workers should be made available on the NHS for “disabled people,” claims blasted on social media today.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder which causes progressive degeneration of the muscles.
Rhys wants to break its taboo and that of sex with disabilities.
“People often ask – ‘how do disabled people have sex?’ I say it depends on the person,” he said.
“It depends on what you can do in terms of physical capabilities. Disabled people have sexual urges. We are still humans, we want sex. We’re the same as everyone else. It’s a fact of life.
“I have the opinion that sex workers should be on the NHS for disabled people like me.”
Rhys’ claims were slammed online.
One woman wrote: “Sorry, but that is taking entitlement to a whole new level.”
Another said: “I have heard everything now! What a world we live in.”
A third posted: “I think the NHS is overstretched enough.”
Rhys would prefer a more meaningful relationship, Wales Online reports, as he is ready to settle down.
But the man, from Treforest, south Wales, recognises being independent with his condition will be challenging at times.
“It’s freedom if you think about it. Obviously, life is going to be hard sometimes, you just have to live your life for today,” Rhys continued.
“When they tell you you’re going to die when you’re 15 – back then that was the life expectancy with muscular dystrophy – life is short, so death isn’t there to scare you.
“For me, independence means everything. I know a lot of people in my situation who live at home with their family. I love my mum, but I want her to be just my mum. I don’t want her to be my carer. I want to be my own man.
“I think I’m at the time in my life where I want more serious relationships. I’m 34 now, you have to settle down at some point in your life.”
Rhys appeared last night on Drych – a series of documentaries that tackle real life in Wales – on S4C, a Channel 4 network only available in Wales.
In it, he spoke candidly about his sex life.
He said: “Every experience I’ve wanted to try, I’ve done it. I can honestly say – I work like any man out there. And I haven’t had any complaints.
“If you need to do something – then you can! If you have a disability, that doesn’t have to stop you. If you can’t do those things, you’ll find a way to do it.”
