Did your name make the new list of UK storms?

The Met Office has published its list of storm names for 2019-20 after whittling down thousands of suggestions down to 21.

It is the fifth year the ‘Name our Storms’ campaign has run.

Atiyah will be the first storm to blow in across the UK, Ireland and Holland this winter, followed by Brendan and Ciara before finally ending on Willow.

The names chosen after submissions from the public aim is to reflect the three nations diversity.

Each strong storm is given a name starting with a different letter – Q, U, X.,Y and Z are not used to keep with US National Hurricane Center naming conventions.

For the third successive year the most popular name for baby girls was Olivia – which also made the cut.

Evelyn Cusack, head of forecasting at Met Eireann, said: ‘The naming of storms by National Met Services as well as colour coding weather warnings provides a clear, authoritative and consistent message to the public and prompts people to take action to prevent harm to themselves or to their property.

‘We are overwhelmed with the huge response to our public call for storm names – please don’t be too disappointed if your name hasn’t been used as you will get another chance next year.’
